For many people, we cannot agree to the phaseout because it provides affordable and accessible transportation options, supports livelihoods, and enables mobility for millions of Filipinos, particularly in underserved areas. However, they contribute to traffic congestion, air pollution, and safety concerns due to their sheer numbers and often outdated engines and maintenance standards. We cannot easily say yes to the jeepney phaseout, but we must appreciate the cultural significance of this in the Philippines. They are often adorned with vibrant artwork and decorations, reflecting the creativity and identity of Filipino culture, and they can also transform transportation in a good way.
